Jan Brubaker

EAT MORE SPAM!

Bob eats SPAM at least 3-4 times per week.

It's great!

FROM "A SLICE OF SPAM" - The official SPAM Fan Club Newsletter Winter 2000, Volume 2, No. 3

Faster than a speeding bullet. More powerful than a locomotive. Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. No, not Superman. SPAM MAN!Bob Brubaker, also known as SPAM MAN, a world-class triathlete who just finished his sixth race, tested his mettle against 1,500 of the world's greatest triathletes in the Ironman Triathlon World Championships. Held in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, on October 23, Brubaker edged out some 50,000 triathletes from 50 countries worldwide to qualify. Inspired, fueled and supported by SPAM, which he enjoyed for dinner the night before the race, the 46-year-old minister from Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, finished the three grueling events in 12 hours and 9 seconds, placing 68th in his age group. The operative word here is "finished." Emblazoned with SPAM logos and cheered on by wife Jan, as well as eight members of his congregation, Brubaker swam 2.4 miles, biked 112 miles, then ran 26.3 miles to complete the world's most famous endurance event. As for the SPAM connection, Brubaker said it all started as a joke when a fellow health club member asked his advice on what to eat during training. "I eat SPAM," he replied. "And from that moment on, I became known as 'the SPAM MAN."'

It didn't take long for the folks at Hormel Foods, makers of SPAM, to pick up on his healthy devotion to the renowned luncheon meat. The company sent him a SPAM T-shirt and cap, which he wore with pride during daily workouts. One thing led to another and, before he knew it, Hormel Foods had generously agreed to support him in Hawaii.

Things reached a critical mass as various publications and news sources - local as well as national - got hold of the story and ran with it (pardon the pun). Suddenly, Bob was enjoying a new-found celebrity status across the country. The nationally televised magazine program EXTRA even got into the act, running a feature story on his SPAMTASTIC exploits.

Of course, wearing a SPAM bike helmet, SPAM swimming trunks and SPAM running gear in Hawaii didn't hurt his popularity. As you may know from some of our previously published stories, Hawaiians consume more SPAM luncheon meat per year than residents of any other state.

"Publicity hit the island before I even arrived," explained Bob. "Jan and I were greeted with a 'Welcome SPAM MAN' at the air-port, I was interviewed twice on local radio and everywhere we went, my wife and I, along with the contingent of friends who came to Hawaii to support me in the race, received a real show of support from the Hawaiian people."

This year has been a big one for Brubaker in other ways as well. In June, he celebrated a milestone in another long-distance event. He and his wife, who faithfully attends all his triathlons, celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.

And his favorite SPAM dish? "Grilled SPAM. I have it at least once a week. I can tell when I don't have my SPAM. I crave it."SPAM. Breakfast, lunch and dinner of champions. Well done, Bob.
