WHAT'S YOUR NAME SAY?

Over the past week you've heard many things about Dale Earnhardt, the NASCAR driver who passed away after hitting the wall on the final lap of the Daytona 500. You could hardly turn on the radio or television without hearing some kind of tribute to him. In one interview after another people would describe what they thought of when they heard the name Dale Earnhardt. You heard descriptions like; intimidator because he was never afraid to take a chance on the racetrack, family man because he was not ashamed to show his love for his wife and family, fierce competitor, and a host of other adjectives. Beyond a doubt, his name has and will be associated with one of the sports figures that brings instant positive recognition.

What kind of thoughts does your name produce?

You don't have to be a famous racecar driver or sports figure to generate instant thoughts from those who know you. We are all establishing a name for ourselves, either good or bad, no matter where we are or what we are doing. The Bible even says we should be more concerned about building a good name and reputation than building up riches.

Proverbs 22:1 (NIV) A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.

How do you get a good name?

Proverbs 3:3-4 (NIV) Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. 4 Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.

LOVE and FAITHFULNESS - two things that money can't buy. Two things that require dedication, action based upon commitment rather than feeling, and two attributes you'll readily find in everyone who has a good reputation.

If you want to have a good week - set your focus on these two qualities and watch how your week and your life will change. These attributes by the way, are associated with God and the fruit of God flowing through our lives. So the real way to establish a good name is to work on staying close to God and allow Him to flow through your life everyday.

GOOD FROM TROUBLE?

Have you ever been in the need of a word of encouragement? We all have. Can you imagine the encouragement you'd need if your mother named you trouble?

I just finished a little book by Bruce Wilkinson called THE PRAYER OF JABEZ and I would highly recommend it. It's based upon the verses in the Old Testament book of Chronicles where you'll find what seems to be a typical genealogy then all of a sudden:

1 Chronicles 4:9-10 (NIV) Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, "I gave birth to him in pain." 10 Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, "Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain." And God granted his request.

How encouraging! God shows us that good came from trouble. Not only in the life of Jabez, whose name means, "TROUBLE" but also out of this account of Jabez countless people have been encouraged and inspired.

Got anything troubling you? Evidently, Jabez' life was a batch of it but he prayed. He asked God to bless him, to enlarge his territory, to keep His hand upon him, and to keep him from harm or evil. AND GOD GRANTED HIM HIS REQUEST. Wow!

Simple: Jabez prayed and believed God and went from trouble to blessing and honor. That can only be God's doing.

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Before you give up on your troubled situation today, take a lesson from Jabez and give God the opportunity to bring good from your Jabez.

THE DECLARATION OF DEPENDENCE

How do you get more power into your life? How do you tackle the big problems? How do you face the unrelenting circumstances? The Bible has the answer - DON'T TRY TO GO IT ALONE. God's help is there for you. It's amazing how often we do everything in our power to make things happen before we declare our dependency upon Him. We'll sit up late and worry, we'll figure and refigure, we'll do just about everything other than what we should do - DECLARE OUR DEPENDENCE ON GOD.

The apostle Paul in the New Testament was facing a difficult time. He called it a thorn in the flesh. We don't know exactly what the thorn was nor did God think it important that we know or He would have had it in the Bible. We do know that rather than go it alone, Paul called upon God. And look what he found:

2 Corinthians 12:7-10 (NIV) To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9 But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Did you catch the words, "my power is make perfect in weakness?"

An admission of our weakness and seeking God's help releases the power to overcome. The catch is admitting a weakness. No matter what the weakness is that is plaguing our lives - we will do almost anything than admit it and seek for help.

As you get ready for your week ahead, prepare a declaration of dependency in God and watch what He does to overcome your area of weakness.

Handling Pressure

How do you handle pressure without blowing your stack? Take a look at how Jesus handled the pressure of the moment, just prior to His being taken to be judged by men and finally to the cross. It was a time of great pressure for Him but when you see things like that you can be assured that as your high priest, He can do more than just represent you before God, He also really empathizes with you when you feel to be under and extreme load and care. As we looked at how Jesus handled pressure as recorded in John 17 we can see some principles good for all of us today.

John 17:1-4 (NIV)1 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: "Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.

  1. UNLOAD YOUR BURDON ON GOD - Are you trying to carry the load yourself? You don’t have to do that. In fact, you are told emphatically not to do that and if you do you are filled with pride - pride that won’t let you admit you need help. Pride like the guy who refuses to ask directions when he is lost. Look what kind of instruction we find in the Bible:

1Pet 5:6-7 (NIV) 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Please notice the word ALL and how it ties into your anxieties or your pressures. He wants ALL of them. So why are you holding on to them?

  1. Jesus knew His purpose in life. Do you? Have you ever thought about why God has you on this earth? We have the responsibility to fulfill the job He has given us to do and the first thing is to figure out what He wants us to do then just do it. The amazing thing that you’ll find is this: the person with purpose and who is focused on that purpose is able to deal with much more than the person who doesn’t.
  1. Jesus abandoned the idea of demanding His rights. Have you ever cut someone off in traffic by accident? The typical reaction is something worse than the return of Frankenstein. People want what is coming to them and are ready to make the person pays who keeps them obtaining their rights. How much pressure people put upon themselves because they demand their rights. Jesus didn’t demand His rights - He gave them up to do the will of God, the Father.
  1. Jesus gave and gave and gave some more. If you want to find a release of pressure in your life - look for ways to be a giver rather than a taker. When you give - you open the path of release of pressure.
  1. Jesus did what He did with excellence - He went all the way - not just part of the way. If you want pressure just do what you are supposed to do in a half hearted way. You may not feel pressure while you are doing it but afterward you will feel the pressure of knowing you could have but didn’t do better.

So what’s it going to be - allowing pressure, worry, and anxiety to get to you - or follow the pattern of the Lord Jesus Christ who showed us how to deal with pressure and is there to help us deal with it properly. Could it be any better?
